Atlético Mineiro have announced that former Brazil international Gilberto Silva has left the club after his contract expired.

Director of football Eduardo Maluf revealed the news to Lance that the 37-year-old would be leaving but thanked the former Arsenal player for his contribution.

“It is a decision of the board. Gilberto came up to expactations. But who defines and makes the decisions in football is the football director and president, it is they who map what is best for the club.

“We have other ideas in our thinking. Gilberto has been helpful, a leader and corresponded. He has other proposals and so do Atlético.”

Silva only featured nine times in the Brasileirão for Galo, with his final appearance coming against Vitória on December 8th.

It is officially unknown whether the footballer, who can play in midfield or defence, will continue his 17-year career. However many pundits believe he will continue and join another team for 2014.

For now, we wait imminently to see what the 2002 World Cup winner will do for his next move.
