Barcelona defender Daniel Alves has revealed his delight at being named in the FIFA world team of the year but also given his backing to team mate Lionel Messi.
Messi was nominated for the FIFA Ballon d’Or award but lost out to rival Cristiano Ronaldo.
Alves was quoted by Lance congratulating Ronaldo but also revealed his opinion that Argentine team mate Messi deserved to be the 2013 winner.
“We know winning and losing. Today is Cristiano’s and we congratulate him. We must not seek excuses, though my personal opinion is different.
“I’m sure Messi will win again, he is happy because he is doing what he loves most.”
Brazil full back Alves was named in the FIFA team of the year once again but said why it was extra special this time.
“It is the fourth year that I am in the ideal team, third in a row. This time it is very special because my Dad was here, he had a great desire to be present.”
The 30-year-old won more silverware in 2013 adding La Liga and the Supercopa de España to his already illustrious CV.
And now the Barcelona defender will look to add a World Cup triumph to his list in 2014.
