A São Paulo court has ruled that the Brazilian league must reinstate the four points that the Rio club were docked for fielding an ineligible player in last year’s championship.

The court said that in order for the league’s decisions to become applicable, they must publish them online or be in breach of the Supporters Statute.

The ramifications of this decision carry potentially greater consequences and are likely to draw out even further the controversy surrounding Portuguesa’s relegation to Série B at the end of last year.

The Superior Court of Sporting Justice docked four points from both Flamengo and Portuguesa last month after both clubs fielded players who had not sat out suspensions. As a consequence, Portuguesa dropped into the relegation zone and Fluminense were spared.

Friday’s ruling will give renewed hope to Portuguesa who are awaiting another court to decide on their appeal.
