Signed for £11m with the help of the Doyen Sports group, the striker was presented to the media on Thursday at a gala in Santos city centre. The player wore the Santos number nine shirt and posed for photos.

The Peixe’s record signing, the 24-year-old says that he does not feel the pressure of his price tag.

“It’s ok, any player that wears this shirt is going to feel pressure, but we will be relaxed about it and will work hard to honour the shirt,” he said.

At his presentation were fans, ex-players and the rapper Emicida, who rapped the first question he had for the Brazil international about what it was like to wear the shirt once worn by Serginho Chulapa.

“It’s a real privilege because he was a great player, just like many of the other players that have played here, like Alberto (who was also present), and I hope to have the same success that he and other players have had wearing the shirt.”

Alberto, who used to wear the number nine shirt at Santos and won the Brazilian championship in 2002 alongside Diego and Robinho, presented Damião with his shirt.
