Brazil midfielder Hernanes admitted he was delighted that Lazio were able to start 2014 with a vital league win over Internazionale and now aims to push the club up the Serie A table.

Lazio had only won in the league five times prior to the winter break and the 28-year-old admitted that poor statistic bothered him.

He conceded that the team focused too much on the Europa League in the latter months of 2013 but was delighted to please the fans with Monday’s 1-0 win over Internazionale, in which the midfielder played the whole 90 minutes.

“When I looked at the table (during the winter break) and saw that in 17 Italian league games, we had only won five, it bothered me.

“Our team focused a lot on the Europa League, not only I but all of my team mates were willing to change that fact.

“There is nothing better than winning against a great team in front of our fans in the first game of the year to bring back the peace and hope for a better 2014.”

Although Hernanes has always been one of Lazio’s best and most consistent performers since joining the club his appetite to continue improving should impress Biancocelesti fans.
