Besiktas deny reaching an agreement to sign Ronaldinho
In recent days, Turkish newspapers have once again been claiming that the Brazilian star is a target of Besiktas.
According to Fanatik, Vatan and Fotomaç newspapers, the brother and agent of R10, Roberto Assis, has met with the leaders of the Eagles to talk about a contract. With the help of sponsors, the Turkish club would be willing to shell out €7 million to take Ronaldinho away from Atlético Mineiro. In a statement, Besiktas denied the story claiming that Assis was only in Istanbul to celebrate the New Year.
Unable to compete financially with the Turkish team, the president of the Galo, Alexandre Kalil, is hoping that sentiment persuades the 33-year-old to renew his contract with the Belo Horizonte club. The board has already scheduled a meeting with Assis to discuss the matter.
“Only after 3 January. Everyone is travelling. Me and the president are out of the country. We have already arranged a meeting. After 3 January we will sort everything out,” Assis said, appearing relaxed about a possible contract extension with the 2013 Copa Libertadores champions.
“It depends on him more than on me. The meeting with Ronaldinho will be like last year, just one meeting. We tell him what we can offer and he tells me what he thinks. In half an hour we'll know if he is to continue at Atlético,” Alexandre Kalil said.
The situation looks likely to be resolved soon. Ronaldinho will be primarily responsible for defining his future as he decides between staying where he already feels at home or making more money in what could be his final spell with a European outfit.
