Atlético Mineiro finish third at the FIFA Club World Cup
A stoppage time winner from Luan gave the Galo a 3-2 victory over Guangzhou Evergrande in Sunday’s third-place playoff in Marrakech.
Despite scoring after just two minutes through Diego Tardelli, the Belo Horizonte team then found themselves pegged back following goals from Muriqui and Dario Conca for the Chinese outfit.
Towards the end of the first half, Ronaldinho levelled matters with another trademark free-kick as he curled his effort into the top right hand corner of the goal.
Despite being in the ascendency, Atlético suffered a setback in the 87th minute of the contest when the former Barcelona man was sent off for retaliating to an apparent stamp from Guangzhou’s Xuri Zhao.
With penalties looming, Diego Tardelli exploited a hole in Guangzhou’s backline, sending Luan through on goal to claim third place for Atlético.
Atlético are only the second Brazilian team to finish in third place at the Club World Cup after Internacional accomplished the same in 2010.
