Benfica forward Lima: “It was always going to be difficult for Anderlecht”
Forward Lima admits it was always unlikely Anderlecht would be able to get a result at Olympiacos and help Benfica progress in the UEFA Champions League.
The Belgium side lost 3-1 at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium, meaning Benfica’s 2-1 win against Paris Saint-Germain was not enough to secure second place.
“Unfortunately the win didn't qualify us,” Lima told UEFA.com. “We knew we couldn't count much on the other match because it was always going to be difficult for Anderlecht.
“We fulfilled our end of the bargain by winning at home, beating a great team like Paris, and that victory was for the fans.”
The 2014 UEFA Champions League final will be held at Benfica’s Estádio da Luz. Lima expects fans will be disappointed that the Águias will not be competing in it.
“All Benfica fans dreamed about us playing the final at home, but we always knew we had to keep our feet on the ground,” he continued.
“The players always thought first about getting out of the group rather than the final, but unfortunately what we did was not enough. We will have other chances.”
