Roma have confirmed veteran goalkeeper Júlio Sérgio has been released.

The 35 year-old, who joined the club in July 2006, will sign with Comercial, according to Lancenet, a team that is based in Ribeirão Preto and has competed in the Campeonato Paulista.

“AS Roma S.p.A. announces that the club and Júlio Sérgio Bertagnoli have come to an agreement for the early termination of the player’s contract, which was due to run until June 30, 2014,” said a statement on Roma’s official website.

“The club wishes to thank the Brazilian goalkeeper for the commitment and dedication with which he defended the Giallorossi colours over the years.”

Júlio Sérgio made 49 appearances across six seasons with Roma, while he also featured 10 times for Lecce during a loan spell in the 2011-12 campaign.

During his time in Rome, he won the Coppa Italia twice (2007 and 2008) and the Supercoppa Italiana (2007).

Júlio Sérgio admits Roma will always have a place in his heart.

“After so many years, almost a life, today I finish my Italian experience and come back to Brazil,” he said.

“I will forever carry great memories of the city and the fans are great.”

The Ribeirão Preto-native came through with Botafogo. He left for Juventude in 1999, before having two seasons at Santos. After rejoining Juventude again, he was then signed by Roma.
