Málaga have “gained in confidence” insists defender Weligton ahead of Osasuna tie
Málaga have “gained in confidence” insists defender Weligton.
The 34 year-old netted a 94th minute equaliser to earn the Andalusia-based side a 1-1 draw at Villarreal.
After back to back defeats against Granada and Athletic Bilbao, Weligton believes it was an important result ahead of Sunday’s Copa del Rey tie with Osasuna.
“It’s always good to score, particularly away to a strong rival,” he said, as reported by Football Espana.
“We could have equalised sooner and come away victorious, but the most important thing is that we played well and I hope we continue in the same way.
“We’ve gained in confidence somewhat and hope to put on a strong performance in our next match. A defeat would have been unfair. We deserved more, and had the penalty on Eliseu been awarded, it could have changed the course of play.
“We all felt very positive and are hoping for a good result in the Copa del Rey game.
“The Cup is a great competition and I hope we can go far and take on Madrid.
“We’re determined to play our best football against Osasuna and win at home in front of our fans.
“It’s often very difficult to come out of a negative situation, but a few consecutive wins would see us right back in the game.
“Our confidence levels aren’t very high at the moment, and when you lose a match it’s tough to find the motivation to work hard.
“We need to return to winning ways and ensure we get our confidence back.”
Weligton initially joined Málaga on loan from Grasshoppers, before signing a permanent deal in June 2008, after securing promotion to La Liga. The veteran has made six appearances this season, scoring once.
