Report: Napoli to rival Everton bid for Porto midfielder Fernando
Napoli are reportedly the frontrunners to sign Porto midfielder Fernando.
Talksport claims manager Rafael Benítez’s is targeting the Brazilian, after a move for Barcelona’s Javier Mascherano was rebuked.
Fernando had been close to Everton in the summer. But with Internazionale, Juventus and Monaco, plus Napoli, believed to be interested, competition for the 26 year-old has intensified.
Fernando, who joined Porto from Vila Nova in June 2007, is out of contract next summer. Dragões president Pinto da Costa is eager to agree a renewal. The player, however, is reportedly reluctant.
Now in his sixth year with Porto - he spent the 2007/08 campaign on loan at Estrela da Amadora - Fernando seemingly craves a new challenge.
The Alto Paraíso de Goiás-native has been ever-present under new manager Paulo Fonseca this season. He has started all 12 of Porto’s matches.
During his time at the club, Fernando has won numerous honours: The 2010/11 Europa League, four Primeira Liga’s, two Taça de Portugal, one Taça da Liga and four Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira.
