Brazil 3-1 Russia: Seleção find late goals to progress into the quarter-finals of FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Brazil showed patience before defeating ten-man Russia 3-1.
Despite Dmitriy Barinov’s dismissal, the Seleção had to wait 72 minutes for a through, with Mosquito netting the decisive strike.
Boschilia added a second, before Aleksandr Makarov pulled one back in stoppage time. Tournament top scorer Boschilia then sealed victory on the counter.
Alexandre Gallo’s side will face Mexico, who beat Italy, in the quarter-finals on Friday.
Brazil started brightly, with Danilo’s header tipped over by goalkeeper Anton Mitryushkin.
Russia managed to frustrate Brazil for large spells, but the dismissal of Barinov on 69 minutes for a rash challenge on Auro would prove their undoing.
It took Brazil three minutes to take advantage. Auro's strong run down the right attracted two defenders, leaving Mosquito free to tap-in his cut-back from close range.
Eight minutes later, the tie was seemingly over, as Boschilia finished smartly beyond Mitryushkin.
A mix up between Eduardo and Lucas, however, allowed Makarov in. His finish had just enough pace to beat Marcos.
Russia now had to press, but their eagerness for an equaliser left gaps that Brazil were able to exploit and finally seal victory. As Boschilia broke, his initial shot was well saved by Mitryushkin, but the stopper could only palm the ball back to the 17 year-old, who fired in his fifth of the tournament.
Mexico will provide Brazil’s toughest opposition yet, as they chase a first title since 2003.
