Felipe Melo hails team effort as Galatasaray defeat København in the Champions League
Felipe Melo admits Galatasaray needed a collective effort to defeat København.
The Brazilian midfielder netted the opener as Roberto Mancini’s side won 3-1 and secured a vital victory in the Champions League.
“I scored my first goal in the UEFA Champions League and it made me even happier to do so in such an important game,” he told uefa.com. “This is not a victory of Felipe Melo, [Didier] Drogba or [Wesley] Sneijder. From the goalkeeper to the forwards, everybody did their job in a good way and this excellent win came [as a result].
“For example, Burak [Yılmaz] fought extremely well in other areas of the field despite being a striker.”
Melo believes Galatasaray benefitted from scoring early and were able to control the game from there in.
“In the first match we played in the Champions League this season, [a 6-1 home loss] against Real Madrid, Galatasaray successfully pressed in the first half an hour,” he continued.
“Had we found the goal within this period, everything could have been different. It was an opportunity for us to take an early lead.”
