Honduras defender Álvaro Romero ‘delighted’ with Roberto Carlos comparisons
Olimpia full-back Álvaro Romero is ‘delighted’ to be compared to legendary Brazilian defender Roberto Carlos.
The 16 year-old is currently with Honduras’ under-17 side at the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Romero’s performances have caught the eye, particularly in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Slovakia.
His small stature and explosive style offer a likeness to Roberto Carlos - one admirers have noted. The Honduran is honoured to be given such a comparison.
“The first time I was compared with Roberto Carlos was earlier this year at the CONCACAF U-17 Championship in Panama,” he told fifa.com. “I’m delighted with the comparison and it’s a great source of pride to me, because he was a superb left-back, and a star for Brazil and Real Madrid.”
Romero admits he tries to mimic the Brazilian’s free-kick technique.
“I’d like to thank everyone for the compliment and I’ll work hard to become like Roberto Carlos or even better. Since I was young, I’ve been practicing free-kicks and I hope to perfect them like Carlos managed to do.”
Honduras are second in Group A behind Brazil. They have four points after two rounds. José Valladares’ side will need to defeat the Seleção on Wednesday to secure top spot.
