Diego Maradona dispute’s Pelé’s FIFA recognition
Diego Maradona has mocked a FIFA poll that honoured Pelé’s achievements.
The 52 year-old was voted Player of the Century in 2000, with Pelé coming second. At the same ceremony, the Brazilian topped a poll voted for by the FIFA Football Family, though Maradona questions its significance.
"In 2000 I won the Player of the Century award thanks to the people. Pelé was second," he said, as reported by goal.com. "He also came second behind [Ayrton] Senna as Brazil's greatest sportsman.
"The award that Fifa gave Pelé isn't worth sh*t. The Fifa directors are all over 95 years old!
"The people there are so old that they cannot even drive a car, so how do they lead the world of football?"
Maradona is currently in Naples. He is expected to watch former club Napoli host Roma at the Stadio San Paolo on Friday night.
He has been out of work since being sacked as manager of Al Wasl in July 2012.
