Hard work is paying off insists Bayern Munich defender Rafinha
Bayern Munich defender Rafinha insists he is not surprised by his excellent start to the new season.
Amongst the numerous changes implemented by new manager Josep Guardiola, the deployment of Rafinha as a regular starter has been perhaps the most surprising.
The Spaniard’s decision to move Philipp Lahm into midfield opened a place at right full-back and Rafinha has grasped the opportunity.
The 28 year-old’s appeared in seven of Bayern’s eight Bundesliga matches this season. He believes his ascent is due in part to a strong work ethic.
"I'm not surprised, because I've always worked very hard to be ready to perform," Rafinha said in an interview with ESPN FC. "But I would say that I'm very happy about the current situation. As a professional, you don't want to work hard for nothing. You want to be on the pitch, to help your team, and show that you're there because you deserve to be."
Last season Rafinha made just 17 appearances in all competitions. The Brazilian's revival this term has led to suggestions he could earn an international recall. His only cap to date came in 2008.
