João Miranda hopes for Seleção recall and believes Diego Costa would be a big loss
Atlético de Madrid defender João Miranda insists Brazil will lose ‘a great player’ if team-mate Diego Costa chooses to play for Spain.
Miranda believes Costa is fairly set on switching allegiance to La Furia Roja, having grown frustrated at his apparent lack of opportunities with the Seleção, including being over-looked for the Confederations Cup.
“Diego Costa is a quality player. What I know, from speaking to him, is that he has not been given a chance with Brazil and as far as playing for Spain goes he is thinking about it a lot.” he told Estadão, as reported by Football Espana.
“He wants to play in a World Cup and it is a dream of his that is on the verge of coming true, but the Brazilian national team will lose a great player, one who is young and has great potential.”
Costa, who has played twice uncompetitively for Brazil, is top scorer in La Liga with ten goals, after eight rounds. The 25 year-old has scored 48 percent of Atlético’s goals this season, as Diego Simeone’s side sit joint top of the standings with maximum points.
When asked his thoughts on nationalising, Miranda insists it is an individual choice for a player. The 29 year-old is also hopeful that he is excellent club form can earn him an international recall.
“It’s difficult and I think each player has his own way of thinking about it and acting upon it,” he continued.
“However, you have to respect Diego’s decision because, even though he is young, he has experience and is known throughout Europe.
“Will I play for Brazil again? I would like to because of the football I’ve been playing, but my idea is to continue to do well for my club.
“I’m happy with the recognition I receive from the local Press and the supporters for the part I’m playing.
“If the chance to play for the national team comes up again I’d be happy and I’d try to do my best, but in any case I’ll still be cheering for them.”
Miranda has started seven games in La Liga this season, keeping three clean sheets. He also netted in the Champions League against Zenit Saint Petersburg.
