The Italian side were on top in the first half and the hosts had two great chances from successive Hernanes corners. The first saw Ederson’s shot was charged down in the six-yard box, then Abdoullay Konko’s glancing header flashed inches past the far post.
Lazio looked the more determined of the two sides after the break as Lorik Cana nodded off target from a corner.
Then the breakthrough came after 53 minutes as Hernanes broke the deadlock when he soared above the crowd to nod in a splendid Keita cross from the left.
After a final few minutes of backs to the wall defending, Lazio held on for the win to begin their Europa League campaign on the right foot.
