Paulinho has high hopes for Spurs’ Europa League campaign
Paulinho is eagerly anticipating Tottenham Hotspur’s Europa League opener against Tromsø IL.
Spurs host the Tippeligaen side at White Hart Lane on Thursday evening. They were drawn in Group K, with Anzhi Makhachkala and Sheriff Tiraspol completing the opposition.
Paulinho, who featured in the first leg of Tottenham’s 8-0 aggregate play-off round victory against Dinamo Tbilisi, hopes to begin with a positive result.
“It is a very important competition for Tottenham. Im sure that we will start very well with an important victory,” he told esportes.terra.
Tottenham were knocked out by Basel at the quarter-final stage of last season’s competition and are being named amongst the favourites this term - a tag Paulinho feels they are worthy of.
“Tottenham prepare well for all the competitions we compete in,” he continued. “Every big club is a favourite. Tottenham is a great club with great players is surely one of the favourites, but we cannot think of the title now. We have to start the competition well and go step by step.”
The 25 year-old has made an impressive start in English football, after being signed by Tottenham for around £17 million from Corinthians.
He had previously been in Europe at FC Vilnius and ŁKS Łódź, but struggled. Having rebuilt his reputation back in Brazil as a linchpin of the Corinthians side that won the Copa Libertadores in 2012, he is now a permanent fixture for Luiz Felipe Scolari’s Seleção.
