Baptistão ‘thrilled’ to open Atlético account
Atlético de Madrid forward Léo Baptistão was delighted to score against Zenit Saint Petersburg, last night.
The 21 year-old netted just 60 seconds into his Champions League debut, after replacing Adrián López, to secure a 3-1 victory for Los Rojiblancos.
“I am thrilled with my goal,” he told uefa.com. “I had just come on [as a substitute] and was immediately celebrating [a goal]. I was really eager to help the team. We are doing phenomenally well but we must remain calm and go step by step in order for things to continue like this.”
The goal was Baptistão’’s first for Atlético. While delighted to open his account, the former Rayo Vallecano striker is aware of the competition for places, but believes all the forward’s will have a role to play.
“I am going to continue to work hard. When I arrived here I knew it was going to be difficult because of the competition that exists at the club; Diego Costa is doing really well while you also have Adrián, Raúl García, David Villa – they're all great. It's fantastic for the team that the attackers are in good form. In any given moment any one of us might need to help out.”
Atlético had taken the lead through João Miranda’s near post header, but were pegged back by a wonderful strike from Hulk, before Arda Turan and Baptistão ensured the three points.
