Weligton wants Champions League return
Málaga defender Weligton hopes the Andalusia-based outfit can return to the Champions League next season.
Los Boquerones made it through to the quarter-finals last term, only to be agonisingly defeated by Borussia Dortmund.
Málaga’s European endeavors, however, affected their domestic form, with 6th the best a squad lacking depth could manage in La Liga.
After being barred from the Europa League by UEFA, Málaga can now solely focus on returning to the Champions League, an aim Weilgton believes they can achieve.
“We are desperate to get back in the Champions League,” he told reporters. “The rise from the group stages was the most exciting thing, but in Dortmund I lived the worst moment of my career.
“I think last year the group was not focused. There were many players who did not know whether they would continue with this project.
“And then when Pellegrini announced he was leaving, thing changed. That was a shame.
“But we are doing a lot better economically now, so hopefully in the near future we can be back in the top three or four.”
Málaga have had a tough start to the new campaign, with just one points from their opening three rounds. They will hope to get their first win of the season at home to Rayo Vallecano tomorrow.
