QPR’s Júlio César missed out on Benfica move
Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper Júlio César has admitted that he was close to joining Portuguese side Benfica.
The 34 year-old, who has been capped 75 times by Brazil, spent most of the summer looking for a transfer, following QPR’s relegation to the Championship.
After talks with the likes of Fiorentina and Roma broke down, Benfica came in with a deadline day bid for the stopper, but couldn’t reach an agreement.
“There had been contact with Benfica,“But unfortunately the transfer did not materialise,” César said, speaking to reporters after Brazil’s 3-1 friendly victory against Portugal on Wednesday.
“I talked to David Luiz about life in Lisbon and the club.”
The former Internazionale and Flamengo goalkeeper will now have to remain with QPR until January and may struggle for playing time, with Robert Green seemingly manager Harry Redknapp’s preferred choice between the sticks.
Benfica signed two Brazilian players this summer, with defenders Bruno Cortês and Guilherme Siqueira arriving on loan from São Paulo and Granada respectively.
