Botafogo miss chance to go top after draw with São Paulo
Botafogo and São Paulo played out a 0-0 draw which did nothing for either side in their respective fights at both ends of the table.
Botafogo remain fourth in the league, and after leading the pack for much of the early part of the season they look to be falling away as many predicted.
Meanwhile down at the bottom, São Paulo remain 19th and in the relegation zone, but move level on points with 18th placed side Ponte Preta. A point against Botafogo could be seen as a good result given the gap between the two sides this season.
The game took place at the Maracanã, and was a back and forth affair which, as the score-line suggests, lacked any quality in either attacking third.
Chances early on in the second half for both teams threatened to break the deadlock, but a Clarence Seedorf shot was saved by Rogerio Ceni, and São Paulo forward Lucas Evangelista shot wide after getting in behind the Botafogo defence.
Both teams next fixtures will be played in the middle of this week, as the busy league schedule means most sides will be playing twice a week for the rest of the season. São Paulo face Náutico on Wednesday, with Botafogo hosting Coritiba on Thursday.
