Crystal Palace 0-1 Tottenham: Paulinho makes solid Premier League debut
Tottenham Hotspur new-boy Paulinho made a solid Premier League debut as Spurs ran out 1-0 winners over Crystal Palace on Sunday.
The Brazil international left Corinthians for White Hart Lane in a £17 million deal earlier this summer, after three years at the club.
And he was named in Andre Villas-Boas’ starting XI for Spurs’ first league game of the season at Selhurst Park.
Paulinho was the most involved out of the new faces in the squad, as his bustling presence in midfield helped the visitors out in what was a scrappy encounter.
Tottenham eventually broke the deadlock early in the second half after Dean Moxey's handball was punished by referee Mark Clattenburg.
Roberto Soldado immediately collected the ball and confidently converted the spot-kick to get his Spurs career off to a scoring start with a debut goal.
The visitors should have doubled their lead in the 69th minute after excellent build-up play between Kyle Walker and Soldado, but Gylfi Sigurdsson dragged his shot wide.
Marouane Chamakh and Kevin Phillips were both introduced late in the game by Palace but neither was able to find a way through a resolute Tottenham defence.
Brazilian midfielder Sandro is still returning to full fitness after a serious cruciate ligament injury ended his season last term.
