Palmeiras midfielder Wesley has been celebrating after his team’s 4-1 win over ABC on Friday in the Brazilian Serie B.

The 26-year-old opened the scoring in the victory and admits he was pleased with his performance.

He also admitted his preference to play a more defensive role in midfield before piling praise on his teammates.

He told Gazeta Esportiva: “I am now in the role that I like to play. I come back with the ball secured and it is much easier for me having Valdivia alongside me. He helps give enough time to make a play or passing the ball.”

Palmeiras signed the Brazil international at the start of last season and his opening goal was his first for the São Paulo-based club. In addition to finding the net, the midfielder also participated in 11 plays, culminating in both the second and third goals.

He added: “Most importantly, regardless of the goal, we left with the positive result and I was able to move around well, help my teammates. Hopefully it stays that way and I can continue.”

The result on Friday moves Palmeiras into second place in the standings of the second national division with 18 points, as they look for an instant return to Brazil’s top tier.
