René Simões appointed Atlético Goianiense manager
René Simões has been appointed as the new manager of Série B club Atlético Goianiense. The former Jamaica boss will replace Waldemar Lemos, who was sacked last week.
Former FC Porto player Argel Fucks was regarded as the favorites to take command of the team, but the board decided to hire René Simões instead.
René Simões recently worked as Vasco's executive director, leaving the club in June after clashing with general director Cristiano Koehler.
Atlético Goianiense's director of football Adson Batista explained the decision to hire René Simões, he told Globo Esporte: René Simões is the new manager of Atlético.
He will be motivated to succeed at a club where he was successful in the past. We are very satisfied, we will motivate this squad as we have a long time until the next game."
Atlético Goianiense's next game will be played on July 6, against ABC, for the Brazilian national second division.
