Flamengo’s manager Jorginho has urged people to be patient with Bebeto’s son Mattheus, as he recently renewed his contract with the club.

Mattheus was seemingly close to joining Juventus, but the Italian club decided to wait his contract to expire before signing him. He however preferred to stay at Flamengo rather than leaving the club for free.

Jorginho is happy that he stayed but believes Mattheus will need time to establish himself, he said: “We had many players that came from the youth team and they were forced to have success too quickly. That doesn’t help, it’s too much pressure.”

“And the fact he is the son of Bebeto doesn’t help either, it doubles the pressure. He will keep working, Flamengo really deserve to have a quality player like him. It’s the club that developed him, so it’s fair that he shines here.”

“We have to be patient, it won’t happen suddenly. Football is dynamic, it may or may not happen. We have to give him time. We’ll work to turn him into a great player.”

Jorginho added: “When I came, it had been decided that he would play for Juventus. I said that we sometimes skip steps in life when we have to be patient.”

“He is a very talented player that needs to improve and be helped to develop. I told him about the difficulties he would find in Italy. It’s a very strong, tactical football and it would be good if he remained here. The transfer ended up not happening.”

“I don’t know if what I said had any influence, but he is a player we have to help to develop.”
