After weeks of negotiations Flamengo have finally announced the signing of striker Marcelo Moreno from Grêmio.

Bolivian international Moreno, 25, moves to the Rio de Janeiro giants on loan until the end of the season but Flamengo have the option to make the deal permanent in October, due to the deadline for Grêmio to pay money owed from the signing of Rodrigo Mendes in 2000.

Moreno, who had spells in Europe with Shakhtar, Werder Bremen and Wigan Athletic, will add some much needed firepower to the Flamengo attack which has been suffering since the sale of Vanger Love back to CSKA Moscow earlier this year.

The forward had an indifferent time with Grêmio. After a bright start at the club, Moreno fell out with coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo earlier this year after the signings of Hernan Barcos and Eduardo Vargas pushed him down the pecking order for a regular place in attack.

The deal had been held up by a dispute over wages owed to the player by Grêmio but, speaking on 29th April, Moreno told Lancenet why he was so keen to join Flamengo.

“I chose Flamengo because it is a team that has everything that I want. They have a great crowd and I’m wondering about the Maracana packed with 80,000 people.

“This leaves any player very happy. I’m going to shine for Flamengo, I believe it is the ideal team for me to turn it up and be a great idol in Brazil.”
