America-RJ’s president Vinícius Cordeiro claims that Adriano turned down an offer to join the club as he will retire.

The small Rio de Janeiro-based club recently made an offer to sign Adriano for the state league seocnd division.

Vinícius Cordeiro explained to Extra why the deal did not work out, he said: “Adriano called me on Easter, he loved our project and thanked us, but also said that he doesn’t want to play football anymore. There are some problems involving his family as they don’t want that he stops playing”.

Adriano’s press officer released a note denying the striker is retiring and denying any contact with America-RJ.

The striker’s career went downhill when his father died, he had a good spell at Flamengo in 2009 when he seemed to be his old self again, but his form and his fitness quickly dropped again.

Adriano has since then played for Roma, Corinthians and Flamengo again, without making any impact.
