Vasco sacked manager Gaúcho following the 0-2 defeat to Nova Iguaçu for the second turn of the Rio de Janeiro State Championship.

Gaúcho was appointed as Vasco’s manager in November, but he failed to achieve impressive results.

The announcement was made by executive director René Simões shortly after the game, which was Vasco’s third defeat in a row in the competition.

The decision is likely to please Vasco fans, who demanded his him to be sacked as Vasco were getting beaten by Nova Iguaçu. Gaúcho is likely to stay at Vasco, but in a different role.

Paulo Autuori is Vasco’s preferred option to replace Gaúcho, while Cristóvão Borges and former Flamengo manager Dorival Júnior are also deemed interesting options.

Vasco’s technical director Ricardo Gomes has a good relationship with Paulo Autuori, which could facilitate a deal, despite Autuori’s high salary demands.

The team’s next game will be played next Wednesday against Olaria, for the Rio de Janeiro State Championship.
