Diego Costa double sees Atlético Madrid beat Osasuna
Diego Costa grabbed a brace but went off injured as Atlético Madrid eased to a 2-0 victory at Osasuna in La Liga on Sunday evening.
The Brazilian put in a man-of-the-match performance to help Atlético move within one point of rivals Real Madrid in second place.
Costa endured a frustrating start to the game as he was blocked by Damià and played a low cross that was too powerful for Radamel Falcao.
However the 24-year-old, who recently earned his first international call-up, put the visitors ahead in the 35th minute with a header, after his initial shot was saved by Andres Fernandez.
Osasuna defender Miguel Flaño gave away a free-kick on the right for a late challenge on Costa shortly after half-time.
Koke whipped the resulting set-piece into the penalty area and Costa was on hand to turn in from close range for his second of the evening.
The forward had to leave the pitch for treatment due to Flaño’s challenge but soon returned in search of a hat-trick goal.
An offside flag stopped him in his tracks, following a pass from Arda Turan, before he stung the gloves of the goalkeeper.
Koke flashed the resulting corner into the box, but Fernandez managed to clear the ball under pressure from Miranda.
Costa had an opportunity to complete his hat-trick on the counter attack as he shot from distance and then chased a rebound.
However, he went down with an ankle injury in the process and had to be replaced by Adrián with 15 minutes left.
Falcao continued to work hard up front for Atlético but failed to find the net before Diego Simeone's side comfortably saw out the game to claim three points.
