Vasco da Gama’s coach Gaucho has dismissed suggestions that he threw young striker Romario into the ‘fire’ after bringing the youngster on as a substitute during their clash against Fluminense.

Romario scored only his second ever professional goal shortly after coming on and delivered an assured performance in Vasco’s 3-2 win.

“I did not throw him into the fire, I knew what I was doing,” said Vasco’s coach. “In football, sometimes you have to throw a player like Romario in a time when we don’t have time to worry about his safety.

“This security will go to next promising young player, Romario now has a place in the squad. He has everything to be a great player in Brazilian football, but we have to give him time.

“We were scoring well, but without much quality on the ball. Romario has never played this kind of classic, but he was an equal match for it the moment he came on.”
