The New York Red Bulls are on the verge of signing Brazilian-born midfielder Rafinha from Toledo in his homeland.
The 20-year-old, who is also of Austrian heritage, recently revealed on his Twitter account that he was set to sign for the MLS side following a pre-season trial.
Although it has not yet been confirmed, Red Bulls head coach Mike Petke hinted that he had been thoroughly impressed by the former Austria U18 international.
He said: “Rafhael is an exciting left-sided player, likes to go up and down, had some very good games in Brazil that we watched, and he’s on a day-to-day.
“We’re keeping him along because we like what we see; but we have to make a decision soon obviously.
“[He] gives us an option with him on the left side if he keeps going the way he’s going. He’s done some good things. It could be a situation we keep him."
Rafinha, whose full name is Rafhael Domingues, began his career in the youth system of various Paraná state clubs including Coritiba and Paraná before signing with Toledo Colônia Work in 2009.
The young attacking midfielder made his professional debut that year, after leading the reserve side with 12 goals, and helped the club gain promotion to the Campeonato Paranaense First Division in 2011.
Red Bulls kick-off their new MLS campaign on Monday with a trip to the Portland Timbers.
