Manchester City’s Maicon has been ruled out for up to a month after after undergoing a knee operation.

The right-back went under the knife to resolve a persistent knee problem which has wrecked his season at Eastlands, having only played three times since being ruled out for two months earlier this season.

City boss Roberto Mancini said to reporters: ”He has had surgery on his knee, but in a month he can recover. The operation was to clean his meniscus.”

The defending champions are short on cover at right-back with Pablo Zabaleta the only available candidate as Micah Richards is also currently sidelined with a knee injury.

Maicon has only played 11 times for the Citizens since making the move from Inter in the summer for a fee of £3m to rejoin his old boss.

City have reportedly suffered another setback, as news emerge that club captain Vincent Kompany will not be available to face Aston Villa in the Premier League next weekend.
