Hulk scored an incredible goal to inspire Zenit St Petersburg to a 2-0 victory over Liverpool in their Europa League last-32 first-leg tie.

The Reds were second best throughout the game at the Petrovsky Stadium, with striker Luis Suarez missing a number of golden opportunities.

Liverpool were made to rue their missed chances when the Russian champions hit a quick-fire double through Hulk and Sergey Semak in the second half.

Hulk stole the ball inside the Liverpool half, after Jordan Henderson lost possession, and sent a thunderous 30-yard strike into the top corner of Pepe Reina’s goal.

The Spanish goalkeeper had been fantastic for Liverpool on the night but had no chance of stopping the Brazilian’s thunderous effort.

Zenit then doubled their lead instantly as substitute Sergey Semak snuck in with a great run and got on the end of Aleksandr Anyukov’s cross to tap in at the far-post.

The result leaves Brendan Rodger’s side in real danger of elimination, with a tense second leg set to take place at Anfield on February 21.
