Douglas Costa emerged from the bench to score for Shakhtar Donetsk as they drew 2-2 with Borussia Dortmund in their Champions League last-16 tie.

The game had been overshadowed by a plane crash at Donetsk Airport just hours before kick-off, and there was a minute’s silence following news that at least five fans had died.

The home side struck first when Darijo Srna found the top corner of the Dortmund net with a spectacular 25-yard free-kick.

However, Borussia’s prolific goalscorer Robert Lewandowski, who had already gone close with a number of efforts, equalised within ten minutes.

The Poland striker initially kicked air, but his embarrassment was spared as two Shakhtar defenders collided, allowing him to fire past Andriy Pyatov from the edge of the six-yard box with ease.

Brazilian winger Taison, signed in January for an estimated £12million from Metalist Kharkiv to replace the Anzhi Makhachkala-bound Willian, put in an excellent performance for his new club.

However, he was replaced by fellow native Douglas Costa just after the hour mark, who went on to put the Ukranian side in front five minutes later.

Dmytro Chygrynskiy pumped the ball long and Mats Hummels failed to deal with it, which allowed Costa to take it down neatly and hit a wonderful strike beyond goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller.

It seemed like Costa’s effort had given Shakhtar the advantage heading into the second leg, which will take place on March 5.

However, Hummels made up for his earlier mistake by directing a header home from Schmelzer’s corner three minutes from time.
