Philippe Coutinho made his first appearance for Liverpool as a substitute in last night’s 2-0 defeat at the hands of West Bromwich Albion after his £8.5m move from Inter.

The Brazilian came on in the 78th minute for Stewart Downing but made little impact on the game as Liverpool were hit by late goals from Gareth McAuley and Romelu Lukaku.

Liverpool dominated much of the game and were handed an opportunity to take victory but captain Steven Gerrard missed a 77th minute penalty after Suarez was pulled down by Jonas Olsson.

West Brom grabbed the first goal minutes later as McAuley met Chris Brunt’s corner with a bullet header in off the bar.

Lukaku then made Liverpool pay for some slack defending as he skinned Daniel Agger to lash home past Pepe Reina to take all three points.

Lucas also featured at defensive midfield but the Seleção star delivered a poor performance short of his usual high standards.
