Grêmio have announced they have clinched the signing of Argentine striker Hernán Barcos from relegated São Paulo giants Palmeiras.

Barcos, 28, had looked to stay at Palmeiras despite their demotion to Serie B last season but Grêmio moved quickly to bring in the striker before the registration process for the Copa Libertadores closes on Tuesday.

The Argentine striker has signed a three-year contract with the Porto Alegre club, who, along with a payment of $2million, have sent Marcelo Moreno, Léo Gago, Vilson, Rondinelly and Leandro to Palmeiras on loan as part of the deal.

Despite Palmeiras being relegated last season Barcos was in impressive form in helping the Verdão win the Copa do Brasil, scoring 28 goals in 55 appearances over the course of the season.

The loaning of players from Grêmio to Palmeiras will be vital for Gilson Kleina’s team who were low on numbers after a number of players left the club in the close season once their contracts had ran out.

However, it is uncertain whether or not Bolivian striker Marcelo Moreno will make the move after reporting to have been unhappy at being included as part of the deal.
