Brazil legend Pelé has cancelled his visit to England for Brazil’s friendly at Wembley on Wednesday as he is still recovering from a hip operation.

The three-time World Cup-winner was due to attend the international friendly as the FA’s guest of honour.

However, Pelé, who was also going to be guest of honour at an awards ceremony on Sunday, has taken longer than expected to recover from the operation in November.

The 72-year-old said: “I would like to send my sincere apologies as, unfortunately, I am unable to attend the England v Brazil match after all.

“However, I would like to wish The FA a very happy 150th anniversary.

“I will come visit England soon and I also look forward to seeing all of you next summer here in Brazil.”

The Seleção, who will also face England at the Maracana on June 2, are due to arrive in the UK on Sunday.
