Santos idols have come out in force to send messages of support and solidarity to the families and friends affected by the tragic nightclub fire in Santa Maria on Saturday night.

The club released a video of coach Muricy Ramalho, goalkeeper Rafael, as well as forwards Miralles and Neymar, all offering messages to those affected by the incident.

Of those involved, Neymar told the video: “It’s very sad, there is not much that I can say. I can only send strength to the families and friends. May God comfort everyone’s hearts. A big kiss.”

The biggest idol in the club’s history was also quick to offer his regards to the people of Santa Maria, as Pelé took to Twitter to comment on the disaster.

O Rei, as he was known in his time at the Vila Belmiro, Pelé expressed hope that the incident would provoke the government to take action to improve security measures at public events.

“My feelings are with the families of the victims of the nightclub fire in Santa Maria and everybody affected by the tragedy,” Pelé wrote.

“So many young people, who had their whole lives ahead of them. I ask God to protect and care for their families. The government needs to demonstrate that it prioritises event security in this country.”
