Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has praised teammate Rafael da Silva, following the right-back’s surprise exclusion from Luiz Felipe Scolari’s Brazil squad.

The new Seleção coach recently named his first team since retaking command of the national team, which included recalls for the likes of Ronaldinho, Júlio César and Luis Fabiano.

However, the former Chelsea manager has left out Rafael, despite the United right-back’s impressive season so far, which has surprised Ferdinand.

The 34-year-old posted on Twitter: “Just seen Rafael da Silva is not in the Brazil squad.

“Best right-back in the Premier League and Champions League this season. Hungry and Improving.”

The 22-year-old has made 18 appearances and scored twice for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side so far this season.

Chelsea centre-back David Luiz has made the Brazil squad, as well as defenders Daniel Alves (Barcelona), Adriano (Barcelona), Filipe Luis (Atlético Madrid), Dante (Bayern), David Luiz (Chelsea), Leandro Castán (Roma) and Miranda (Atlético Madrid).
