Brazil goalkeeper Diego Alves suffered a nightmare evening in goal as a Cristiano Ronaldo inspired Real Madrid blasted five goals past Valencia in a resounding 5-0 victory.

Five first half goals were enough to dispatch Valencia after a scintillating performance by the Portguese star who grabbed a brace.

Gonzalo Higuain opened the scoring after nine minutes and Real had to wait until the 34th minute for their second, then the floodgates opened.

In just two minutes, Angel di Maria and Ronaldo had netted to make it 3-0 to the Blaugrana. Ronaldo completed a brace of goals and di Maria added another just before the break.

Satisfied with the scoreline, Jose Mourinho’s side played out the rest of the game in an evening that Alves and Jonas are unlikely to forget any time soon.

Real now close the gap on league leaders Barcelona to 15 points after the Catalans lost 3-2 to Real Sociedad on Saturday.
