Both Flamengo and Vasco put difficult close seasons behind them to open their Campeonato Carioca accounts with convincing wins, against low level opposition.
Flamengo were first up against Quissamã, earning a 2-0 victory thanks to two goals from previously out-of-favour striker Hernane.
Later in the evening, former Porto attacking midfielder Carlos Alberto starred as a new look Vasco side ran out 3-0 winners over Boavista.
The Champions League winner opened the scoring in the first-half, before fellow forwards Bernardo and Eder Luis completed the rout for the visitors after the break.
