Brendan Rodgers admitted that it could be next season before Liverpool fans see Lucas Leiva at his best as he continues his recovery from an injury nightmare.

Lucas continued in midfield for Liverpool’s 5-0 demolition of Norwich City and was taken off after 70 minutes for youngster Raheem Sterling to preserve his fitness.

Rodgers told reporters after the match: “I still don’t think we’re going to see the best of Lucas probably until next season.

“If you’re out for a year, it takes a while to get back. Some people will tell you it’ll take you another six months to a year to be back at your best.

“We’re just trying to get him as many games as we possibly can and as many minutes as we can. But certainly him and Steven Gerrard in there were fantastic.”

Liverpool secured all three points thanks to goals from Jordan Henderson, Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge, Steven Gerrard and a Ryan Bennett own goal, cementing their place in seventh, six point behind Tottenham in fourth.
