Midfielder Marquinhos is set to join Avaí for fourth time in his career after being told he can leave Grêmio.

Marquinhos, 31, started his career with Avaí as a youth player and then moved to the first team before moving to Europe with Bayer Leverkusen in 2000. He joined Grêmio from Santos in 2011 but has been told by coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo that he is no longer required.

"Marquinhos talked to me, there was also a discussion of the President of Avaí and with President Koff [of Grêmio]. To not get his head on something else, to be unfocused, he was eventually released," Luxemburgo told Globo Esporte.

The midfielder played an important role for Grêmio last season, often off the bench as a second half substitute, and finished the season as the second top assist maker for the club in the Brasileirão.

However, the desire for first team football seems to have caused Marquinhos to ask to leave the tricolour and return to Avaí, where, apart from at the start of his career, he also played in 2006 on loan from Iraty, in 2008 on a permanent deal from the same club and then in 2011 on loan from Santos before moving to Grêmio.
