Vasco da Gama are reported to be in talks with Malaga over signing former Real Madrid midfielder Júlio Baptista.

According to Lancenet!, Júlio Baptista, 31, who has been out injured for Malaga since March last year due to a hip injury, is believed to have been offered to Vasco this week by his Spanish club, possibly due to the rise of their young Spanish playmaker Isco in Baptista’s absence.

Vasco refused to comment on the deal, but the report suggests that the club’s board see Baptista as the ideal big name that the team needs following the loss of Juninho and Felipe in the last month.

Baptista, who spent one year on loan at Arsenal during the 2006-2007 season, started his career at São Paulo before moving to Sevilla in 2003. His impressive form at Sevilla earned him a move to Real Madrid but the move didn’t work out and, after his spell in England, he moved to Roma in Italy and then eventually moved back to Spain with Malaga in 2010.
