Cruzeiro director of football has confirmed the shock exit of forward Wellington Paulista, who will join Premier League side West Ham on loan.

Wellington, 29, was a regular for Cruzeiro this season and scored 10 times for the club, including five penalty kicks.

Although it is no surprise that the forward has left the Minas Gerais side, it is his destination that has caused raised eyebrows.

Even among his own supporters, there would have been few who considered him a candidate for a Premier League move.

“Cruzeiro would like to thank Wellington a lot, he is a great professional,” Mattos told reporters. “He always honoured and liked Cruzeiro a lot, as Cruzeiro liked him also. The clubs doors are always open for him.”

The striker leaves for London on loan, having scored 75 goals in 160 appearances in two separate spells at Cruzeiro. He has also represented both Palmeiras and Botafogo in recent seasons.
