Liverpool’s Lucas Leiva has praised fellow South American Luís Suarez and says he inspires everyone at the club with his desire on and off the pitch.

Lucas spoke to Globoesporte about his return from injury and praised the exploits of Uruguayan striker Suarez who scored his 18th goal of the season against Sunderland in the midweek.

“Luís has had a great season. He captivates everyone with the way he plays, with and without the ball.

“He’s a striker that helps influence the players around him who sees the desire he has. We hope that it stays that way this season.

“We have a great friendship off the field, our families are very close. We created a great friendship here and we are trying to take it onto the field in order to succeed.”

Lucas also took the time to praise the fans for their support during a difficult 2012 in which he suffered two major injuries ruling him out of much of the year.

“It’s good for the mind. After a lot of downtime, trust is important. It’s a question of when I’ll be back at my best level, but every game I feel better.

“In the last game I felt great. The coaching staff have given me a lot of confidence. I’m happy with my progress every game. Physically, I’m close to ideal.

“My knee hasn’t given me a problem, and the most important thing is that I keep playing. I’m improving all the time.”
