The father of Brazilian striker Neymar has once more insisted that his son will leave Santos for European football in 2014, with Barcelona his father’s current preference.

Neymar, 20, has always said he will remain in Brazil until after the 2014 World Cup and this was reiterated by his father, but despite admitting some preference for Barcelona, he was quick to suggest that could all change in the next 18 months.

“He wants to play in Europe. We have reduced his contract from 2015 to 2014 so he can go then,” he told Catalan newspaper Sport. “Until the World Cup he will help to give Brazilian football the opportunity to improve once again.

“I believe Barcelona is the best route. Barcelona’s football is similat to Neymar. They score goals inside the area, like Neymar. But, we have to wait. It may be that Barça don’t want him in 2014. How can I say now that Neymar wants to go to Barcelona? The club also can’t say anything. It’s better that everybody stays quiet.”

For their part, Santos are optimistic that Neymar will not necessarily leave after the 2014 World Cup and, only recently, president Luis Alvaro spoke of the club’s dream to maintain the player’s services long-term.
