Zenit St Petersburg’s Hulk has dismissed suggestions that the club’s supporters are racist and says he has never been the target of such abuse since he joined from FC Porto.

Hulk told reporters: “They always encourage the team and play along the athletes. But they need to treat everyone with respect.”

The Seleção star also dismissed reports of a rift in the squad as it was suggested that some players had boycotted the team in protest at the Brazilian’s wages.

The player has also come in for criticism after snubbing a handshake with coach Luciano Spalletti during Zenit’s 1-0 win over AC Milan in the Champions League.

Hulk then argued with coaching staff before storming off the pitch, but the striker has now apologised for his behaviour.
